Ode to the Spirit Tree

Composed by the Qianlong Emperor
Autumn, 1778

In the Eternal Tomb, curtains veil the worldly chattels of our founding father; Accompanied by Fuman, peacefully interred deep inside the dragon’s vein, with Giocangga and Taksi prominent on either side. Growing before Fuman, an auspicious elm, luxuriant dome sheltering both terrace and wall, Respectfully called “Spirit Tree”, the subject of this reverential ode.

Oh what great virtue! Enlightened destiny a mountain, the dragon stem of Changbai; The tomb itself a key to mysteries, the foothills an emerald arbour, with the providential flow of the Sukusuhu, a triad formed by mountains, An originary shrine concealing bright pennants, to honour and augur for generations, the grand achievements of one thousand autumns. Whence grows the Spirit Tree? Neither cypress or pine, its roots arise in Heaven, emanating from the Milky Way; Planted in the mortal realm, this verdancy of delicate fragrances before me is clearly a gift from the gods to the world.”
